Individual of the Week-Victoria

Starting off, introduce yourself to us. Tell us your name, job, and two fun facts about yourself.

Hello, I’m Victoria, a full time blogger and online money maker from the south west of England in the UK.  I’ve been blogging since April 2013 at Lylia Rose and since May 2017 it’s been my full time job.  I also started a new blog in January 2018 called Healthy Vix and I also blog regularly on my husband’s home and DIY blog called Wood-Create as well as my new travel blog, Travel Vixta.  I absolutely love to write and I love blogging as you can probably tell!  Four blogs keep me very busy!  

As well as blogging taking up almost all my time, I’m also a mum to my two children – Bella age 6 years and Reuben age 3 years.  Life is certainly busy!  

Two fun facts would be that we have pet chickens and that we are all vegan (me, my husband and our two children).

 

What is your current goal that you are working towards?

At the moment it would have to do with finances.  My goal for 2019 is actually to save the rest of my emergency fund.  I’m halfway there and I want to save enough to last 6-12 months in the event of an emergency – say me or my husband got ill or injured and couldn’t work or lost our jobs.  It’s something that worries me, especially as I’m self-employed so I have less security, so to stop myself being so anxious about it I am working on our savings.  It’s my main focus at the moment, so we’ll be more careful with our spending as a family in 2019 to reach this goal and hopefully I can relax a little knowing we have some financial backup.

 

What is one obstacle in your way of achieving above mentioned goal? And what is your plan in overcoming that obstacle?

Life!  Wanting to have fun, have days out, visit attractions and go on holidays.  To reach our goal we will have to curb our spending for a while, so no holidays in 2019, or at least nothing major, which is tricky as I have a major travel bug!  I want to get out into the world and explore.  I just need to be sensible and get my savings in place first, then think about holidays and so on.

 

Why is your goal so important to you?

Because I’m self-employed so financially I’m not stable – I never know how much money I will make each month.  I have luckily always made a fairly consistent wage which has been great, but I’m always aware that it’s not guaranteed and I could have a quiet month.  I think if I was single and had no responsibilities then I wouldn’t be so bothered, but I have two young children and a mortgage now, so it’s more important than ever that we feel secure and have some sort of backup.

 

Who is your role model? Why?

I don’t have one particular role model, but anyone who is chasing their dreams and doing something they love.  I find it so inspiring when people set up their own businesses and I love to learn all about them, their motivation and their ideas.  I’d much rather be this way and inspired by these sorts of people than stuck in a dead-end job I moan about everyday but don’t do anything about…

 

What is one cause/issue you think is important to bring awareness to and why? 

A plant based diet is something that’s really important to me.  Originally I changed my diet for my own health because healthy living is a passion of mine, but I’ve been reading and watching so much about how consuming animal products and the way they are raised is destroying the environment and wildlife and so on.  It’s really bad and I don’t think many people realise the terrible consequences of animal agriculture today, from mangroves being destroyed to create fish farms which quickly get diseased so they need medicines which pollute our water supplies, to the insane amount of toxic chemicals being sprayed on crops to feed livestock and so on.  The current book I’m reading is called The Food Revolution by John Robbins which explains many of the effects our modern meat and dairy diets sadly has for the planet.  There are so many books on the topic and news about it all nowadays.  The information is there and I just hope more people find it and think about how their everyday actions can have a huge effect on their own health, other animals, wildlife and the planet.

The reason I got interested in it all is because I want to be the healthiest I can be.  I’m very passionate about leading a healthy lifestyle and taking responsibility for your own health.  I follow a plant based diet, choose organic whenever possible and try to choose fair-trade or small independent food companies who have great values and support good causes.  I do believe we can vote with our fork.

I think too many people nowadays have an unhealthy lifestyle and simply expect the doctor to cure them of whatever illness they have given to themselves through this poor lifestyle.  Food is so much more than just something to fill a void or for us to gorge on.  It’s the fuel for our cells and if we get it wrong then our bodies won’t work as expected or can’t fight off diseases. Food is our medicine and I really believe that most illnesses and diseases are caused by our diets based on everything read and watched over several years now.  

Another great book to read is The China Study by T Colin Campbell which looks at the links between nutrition and disease in the largest nutritional study ever undertaken.  There are also a couple of great YouTube videos which I recommend if you are interested in eating healthier and those are ‘The bitter truth about sugar’ by Dr Robert Lustig and also ‘The body is a healing system’ by Ben Fuchs.

So basically, the cause I think is important to bring awareness to is people taking responsibility for what they choose to eat.  It effects so much more than just stopping us feeling hungry.

 

What is one thing you do to relax or relieve stress?

I love to go to the gym.  I run on the treadmill 3-4 times a week which is a great stress buster.  I also love yoga and I go through phases of doing it every day for a couple of weeks or so.  It makes me feel great and I’d love to dedicate more time to yoga, but life is quite busy at the moment.  If I had more time then I’d definitely practice yoga every day.

 

Do you have any guilty pleasures? If so, what are they?

Watching the X Factor each year!  I’m not a very commercial or mainstream person at all, but I do love watching the competition to see who wins and what I think of their performances.  It’s not even my sort of music or anyone that I would continue to listento.  My husband is always baffled every year at why I want to watch it.  It’s my guilty pleasure as it’s something I shouldn’t love, but I do!

 

Who are your favorite bloggers and what drew you into their blog?

Two of my favourite bloggers are Honest Mum and Slummy Single Mummy.  I love how they write in their own unique voice and haven’t got a specific niche.  They’ve managed to make a success of their blogs and turn it into a living even though they both write about a variety of topics.  I found them both very inspirational, especially when I wanted to be a lifestyle blogger but all the advice was to niche down and have one topic.  They showed me that you can still write about whatever you like and be a successful blogger.
